Oversize Truck tires, satelitte dishes, propane tanks, mushroom bonks, gongs, and one of the most progressive urban influenced features in the region all highlighted the one-of-a-kind Red Bull ThingamaJIB rail jam at ATP last weekend. Needless to say, some amazing riding went down, along with some breath-holding falls from chargers all day long!
Dealing with a winter such as this is never easy for a ski resort or terrain park, but ASM and ATP had been able to make enough snow to withstand the warm and rain the week prior to the ThingamaJIB. With the weather forecast looking pretty decent for the event, it was on. The rain pulled out Friday morning, and the crew got to work non-stop through the day and night to get the Appaljack Terrain Park completely redesigned with our brand new ThingamaJIB features for the Saturday event.
Up at the Drop In
Sunny skies and moderate temps greeted the 70 ThingamaJIB competitors Saturday morning. The course opened up for warm-ups at 11:30 and the action didn’t stop until the results were in and winners were announced. Red Bull also provided their signature MXT on-site with Mr. DJ Overcash mixing the jams. For those who are unfamiliar, the MXT might be the coolest vehicle ever made, a complete party station who’s roof rises on hydraulic rams to reveal a DJ setup and 1,800-watt sound system with four Mackie speakers capable of 123 decibels. Four LCD flat-panel monitors play video highlights of Red Bull-sponsored athletes in action, or video games through an Elite Xbox. An onboard Cummins Onan generator makes it possible to power up this extreme party machine just about anywhere – sick!
Check the edit coming soon to see the shredding speak for itself! The two 45 minute jam sessions were packed full of all sorts of tricks & combos. The setup provided several different options for almost every feature – all of which were used.
10 Ski and 10 Snowboard finalists were selected from the Jam sessions for a Final heat that was concentrated on the ATP Plaza – the top area of features consisting of a Wallride/Creeper Ledge, Stairset, Handrail, & closeout rail. Some highlights included 360’s & 450’s onto the stairset handrail, 360’s out of the creeper ledge, switch ups & lots of spinning out of the closeout feature, as well as some closeout pit slams that left riders just a little bit disoriented. Judging became very difficult in both ski & snowboard categories, and winners were decided by the slimmest of margins.
